Help the Community with Your Hobbies

Whether you sew, crochet, knit, make art, or just like arts and crafts in general, you might have thought about how to help out your community with these hobbies. If you are in high school looking for volunteer hours or simply just want to help out your community, this is a great place to get started! Many of the following things I have done myself. Trust me that it’s easier to find opportunities than you think!

Crochet

Crochet is the one hobby that I have the most experience in when it comes to community service. I have helped to create and manage multiple different successful volunteer projects. See if a local organization is looking for crochet or knit hats, blankets, scarves, etc. I set up a project where people could crochet reusable cotton rounds, scrunchies, and washcloths for a local organization collecting hygiene products. Another project I helped to organize was where people made crochet pumpkins which we delivered to a local nursing home.

Art

Making art and giving it to people is a great way to show kindness. One simple and easy way to use your art skills for a good cause is to create cards and send them to hospitals or other places that will take them. This is a really quick way to brighten someone’s day with your art!

Sewing

Similar to crochet, organizations may ask for sewn items. For example, you can sew surgical caps for hospitals, clothing and hygiene products for people in need, or anything else that local organizations are looking for.

Creating Your Own Opportunities

One of the best ways to help out your community is to start your own projects. For these projects, the organizations may not be looking for a specific item (for example, not looking for specifically crochet), or not looking for any donations at all. Contact these places to see if they would be willing to take in your items. You just need to look for the opportunities yourself, and most likely, people will be happy to receive your handmade items!
