How to Use a Sketchbook

All artists should have a place to let their creativity take over without worrying about perfection. Sketchbooks are also a great way to get your ideas out for future art projects and to practice your art skills. This blog post will go over all of the ways that you can use your sketchbook. It is great if you use your sketchbook for multiple or all of these purposes!

Planning for your future art pieces is one of the most important uses for a sketchbook. You can try out different compositions and colors for an art piece before starting it. Draw out small versions, or thumbnails, of the piece that you want to make to make sure that you like how everything is laid out. It is also great to have an idea to look back on while you are creating your artwork so you don’t forget any details. For example, I sketched out how I wanted a dress to look before I made it. These sketches can help you pick how your piece looks and how you will construct it. This is also proof that your sketchbook doesn’t have to look good! To be creative you have to get all of your ideas out, and for many artists it may not be in the most organized fashion. You can read more about planning using a sketchbook in my blog post about coming up with ideas for your art.

Practicing Skills

Practicing your art skills is a great way to use your sketchbook. You can look up images or tutorials online to practice shading, figure drawing, and more. This is a good use for your sketchbook because you can practice without a feeling that you need to be perfect. That is what practice is for, anyway, trying to improve on your skills.

Expressing Creativity & Having Fun

What is the point of creating art if you are not having fun? Sure, maybe you don’t want to “ruin” an artwork by trying out a different style or colors. That’s where your sketchbook comes in! You can just create. Some of these ideas that you may have can turn into real art pieces. You just need to start with a quick sketch.

I hope this post was helpful for when you are trying to use your sketchbook. Remember that you can draw whatever you want in it, and it doesn’t have to be perfect. Just have fun!
